The Cost Impact of Tape Backup
Have you ever considered the cost of relying on a tape or disk backup system?
Have you ever lost an hour of work on your computer? Or maybe more? What if you and all of your colleagues lost days or weeks of work? Or what if you lost your client database, financial records, and all of the work files your company has ever produced or compiled.
Other things that might cause this loss are- What if a major storm, flood, or fire destroyed your office and all of your files? Or someone left a tap on in the kitchen above the computer room? Do you have an emergency recovery plan in place that you feel confident in? How quickly do you think you could recover, if at all?
We find many small business owners know this is an issue but aren’t able to do much about it because they don’t know what is available and/or they don’t have the right advice to let them know what is available. And unfortunately sometimes it is just too late….
How Disaster-Proof Is YOUR Network?
Ok, agreed, the likely hood of a major natural disaster in the South is pretty low, but man-made floods, burglaries and fires aren’t. The question I ask business owners is this. How long can you afford to have your entire network be down? Is it 10 minutes, 1 hour, 1 day or 1 week?
If you can tolerate being down for 4 to 5 days, then the traditional tape drive backup solution will be sufficient for you. 1 week? Yes, it would typically take 1 week to get back up and running with a tape backup solution (one company took two weeks due to shipping problems with the servers).
Imagine this scenario:
Day 1: Monday 1PM – Your server crashes and the computer chap comes out. He comes out the same day, works on it for several hours and he then declares it dead. It is now too late to order for a next day delivery and therefore it is Day 3 before it will turn up.
Day 2: 8AM – Your computer company does some work on site but is essentially waiting for the new server.
Day 3: If the server turns up the tape restore process can start.
Day 4: 8AM – Your sleep deprived computer chap arrives and connects the new server to your PC’s and domain. You are back in business by the end of the day.
This is a realistic time of the steps that would occur.
Our BDR Appliance can reduce this time down to ¼ of a day i.e. 2 hours. Please see below for the approximate costs for being down for a week would be:
